Biography

Prof Kothandaraman Ramanujam, a professor at IIT Madras (Since 2021), completed his Ph.D. from IISc Bangalore in 2006 and joined the Department of Chemistry-IITM in March 2011 as an assistant professor. He was born in a business town called Komarapalayam (near Bhavani), which is located at the bank of river Cauvery, in 1978. He completed his B.Sc in Chemistry from Sri Vasavi College affiliated to Bharatiyar University. Obtained his M.Sc in Applied Chemistry from Anna University in 2000. He was introduced to the field of Materials Electrochemistry by Prof. Ashok Kumar Shukla at the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and obtained his Ph.D. in 2006. After two successful postdoctoral stints at Michigan State University-East Lansing (Mentor: Prof. Scott C. Barton, 2007- 2009) and National Research Council of Canada-Ottawa (Mentors: Dr. Christina Bock and Prof. Barry MacDougall, 2009-2011), he joined the department of Chemistry-IITM. Since May 2025, he has been an Adjunct Professor at the Center for Future Materials, University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He is Annamalai & Santhi Chair Professor of IIT Madras. He was bestowed with Masila-Vijaya award by the Academy of Sciences in 2024 for innovative patents. He is the recipient of the CRSI 2023 Bronze Medal and recipient of the SMC-BARC Bronze Medal 2023, Amara raja Award 2021 by ECSI and IESA Researcher of the Year award in 2024 from Indian Energy Storage Alliance. He is the founding chairman of the Society of Materials Chemistry, Chennai Chapter. He served as vice president of Electrochemical Science and Technology (SAEST-Karaikudi) and Indian Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry (ISEAC-BARC) in the past. He serves as an executive council member of the Electrochemical Society of India, Bangalore. He is also a member of the technical committee of the (Accelerated Life Cycle Test of ACCs Working Group) Bureau of Indian Standards. His research focuses on contributing to realizing India-centric solutions for the ever-growing need of energy storage and conversion. He has done two technology transfers on vanadium redox flow battery and zinc-bromine redox flow battery. Recently, he has commissioned a 10kW/0.1MWh Vanadium Redox Flow system at Trichy, at TRL 7 level. Towards India-Centric solutions, his motivation is in the direction of developing new functional materials, redox-active organic molecules and utilization of abundant resources such as sodium and zinc towards developing of newer energy systems. His academic research pursuits are under the broad headings of (i) Lithium/Sodium/Zinc/Vanadium based batteries (ii) Solid-State electrolyte and (iii) Electrochemical reduction of CO2 into formic acid and syn-gas (iv) Electrochemical reduction of N2, NO3– into NH3 (v) Electro organic synthesis (vi) Decoupled electrolysers for hydrogen production and (vi) Electrochemical water cleaning.
