The Department of Chemistry is one of the first Departments to function after the Indian Institute of Technology Madras was founded in 1959.
The Department began with one Professor and one lecturer as faculty members, to conduct classes for the undergraduate engineering programme of the Institute.
Prof. Pradeep has been elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Engineering and Technology Institute.
Prof. Debashis has won the Atal Achievement Awards 2024.
Prof. Sekar has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Arnab Rit has been awarded CRS Bronze Medal.
Applications are invited throughout the year from highly motivated, talented students who have completed M. Sc in Chemistry with a valid GATE score or a valid fellowship from CSIR(JRF), UGC(JRF) or DST(INSPIRE).
Professor Yujiro Hayashi will deliver a guest lecture titled “Total Synthesis of Biologically Active Natural Products Using Organocatalyst” on 19th February, 2025 at 3.00 PM in CB-310.
Prof. Holger Braunschweig will deliver a guest lecture titled “Activation of small molecules: can Boron act as a transition metal?” on 17th February, 2025 at 3.00 PM in ICSR Hall III (A. M. M).
