I studied in Schaffter High School, Tirunelveli upto my SSLC. I completed my SSLC in 1974. I worked for an year at Mumbai (then Bombay) during 1974-1975 before joining MDT Hindu College for my Pre University Course (PUC). After completing PUC in 1976 I joined for BSc Chemistry in the same college and completed BSc Chemistry with ancillary Physics and Maths subjects in the year 1979. I got admission for B.Tech (3 year course) in Metallurgy in IISc Bangalore and MSc Chemistry at IIT Madras.  Driven by the strong interest I had in chemistry I decided to join MSc Chemistry at IIT Madras and completed it in 1981. While preparing to secure admission for PhD abroad I joined IIT Bombay for PhD in July 1981 and left in June1982.  I joined for PhD program in the Department of Chemistry, University of Victoria, BC, Canada under the supervision of Prof. A. Fischer who was then the Vice President of the University. For my PhD research I worked in the area of IPSO nitration and organolithium reagents. After completing PhD in 1985 (3.5 years) joined the group of Prof. J. K. Kochi as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Houston, USA. For postdoctoral research I worked in the areas of organic charge transfer complexes and kinetics of photogenerated reactive intermediates using time resolved spectroscopy in the nano and picosecond time domains. I was with Prof. Kochi during 1985 to 1990, simultaneously looking for a job in India. IIT Madras offered me a visiting faculty position which I joined on 7th January 1991. I was regularized as an assistant professor in June 1991.
